“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives," (Genesis 50:20).
Joseph was his father's favorite child, and his brothers envied this. One day, they sold him to slave traders and then told their father that he had been killed. The traders brought Joseph to Egypt, where he became a servant to Potiphar. Although Potiphar favored Joseph, tragedy struck Joseph's life again when Potiphar's wife made advances at Joseph who rejected her. She lied about the incident, and Joseph was thrown in prison.
In prison, he was able to interpret the dreams of other prisoners, and eventually was called upon to interpret one of Pharaoh's dreams. God revealed the meaning to Joseph and was able to inform Pharaoh of the meaning of his dream. Because of this, Pharaoh put Joseph in a position of authority. A bit later, while passing out food during a famine, Joseph came face to face with his brothers. Eventually, he told them who he was and they lamented over their actions. Joseph forgave them.
Joseph faced countless hardships throughout his life, yet he remained faithful to God. God used Joseph's experience to save many people. Had he not been put in the position that God gave him, many Egyptians would have starved in the famine. God used the horrible thing Joseph's brothers did to him for good.
We often find difficulty in placing our trust in God when we face tough situations, we need to remember; "in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose," (Romans 8:28).
